How to grow healthy hair – seeing a trichologist

My hair has been a real concern and insecurity after losing half of it (I wish this was a joke). Instead of trying these weird hair trends and hacks bombarded online, I booked an appointment with an experienced trichologist. With her help, I’m now growing healthy and strong hair and that’s why I highly recommend seeing a trichologist. Not only do you get a full hair and scalp examination, you get personalised products, recommendations and tips. My trichologist has also been enormously supportive and answered any questions I have had during my journey.

Everyone’s situation is different but these are things that helped me to grow healthy hair. My starting point was thinly growing hair and excess hair fall. So these steps are meant to promote healthy hair growth, focusing on hormones and proper diet as those were the main factors for my hair loss.

Scalp massage treatments

I have gone to scalp massage treatments twice a month and I massage my scalp at home every night. The scalp treatments are more intense: my trichologist applies personalised oils and massages my scalp. At one point, she uses an electric wand to really boost the blood flow. It’s rather unpleasant but it has worked amazingly! At home I use a personalised scalp spray and massage gently with my fingers.

Scalp conditioner

I use a personalised scalp conditioner after shampooing my hair. The ingredients help to prevent hair loss, hence I apply it on my scalp. I use a regular conditioner for the rest of my hair.

Leave on conditioner and oils

Nothing special here, I use regular hair oils or leave on conditioners. This helps to moisturise my wavy hair and prevent fizziness. This actually has nothing to do with hair loss prevention but my hair looks better this way 😊

Food is extremely important

I hate that it comes down to my diet because I seem to struggle so much. The key takeaways are to prioritise protein and eat a diverse diet. Moreover, she recommended taking vitamin supplements if there’s reason to believe I’m lacking on vitamins. Therefore, she highly recommended to work with a nutritionist as well. Honestly speaking, I didn’t do this yet.

Don’t lift heavy

As the goal is to prevent hair loss and grow strong hair, this is an absolute must. She explained that lifting heavy weights at the gym don’t work for my benefit because this boosts testosterone levels and I want the opposite. Of course moving your body is important but I should think about increasing estrogen. The recommendation was to use lighter weights but increase reps or do different types of exercises (body weight, yoga, dancing etc.).

Results after 6 months

In six months, my hair quality has improved and I’m experiencing decreased hair loss. My hair was curly when I was a lot younger then I thought it’s wavy, however I was surprised to see how curly my hair got! After around 3 months my hair felt stronger, looked better and it got curly. Now I get pretty intense curls after washing it. It’s exciting. In 6 months new hair that grows is not as thin as before. It will take a bit longer for them to grow out but I’m definitely on the right track to a thicker hair that I had many years ago.
